Andrew Mason Forced Out as CEO of Groupon

Andrew Mason — founder of daily-deal site Groupon — has been stiff-armed out of power, according to The Next Web. The announcement comes after an ugly fourth-quarter financial performance, and a generally anemic stock price.

Mason wrote in a letter to employees, “I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding — I was fired today.”

Of course, with the questionable long-term sustainability of Groupon and LivingSocial, Mason could be getting out at the right time. Plus, mercurial founders getting booted from their own companies is the story of Silicon Valley — the key will be Mason’s next act. Although his most recent Twitter post as of this writing lets us know what he WON’T be doing:

“OK, I’m good on the fat camp recommendations. You may stop. Thank you,” he told his 28,270 followers. Tweeted like a true ex-CEO.
