Basno Raises $1 Million for Digital Badge Platform, Gives Out Medals for Boston Marathon

Basno, a digital badges platform, has raised a $1 million fund from Index Ventures, RRE, MESA+, Plough Penny Partners, Empire Angels and others, according to TechCrunch.

Basno, based in New York City, plans to partner with brands to utilize its array of badges, and has already partner with Virgin Atlantic to give badge owners bonus miles. It might sound a little faddish, and, uh, it kind of is. The official website features a “2013 Boston Marathon Finisher Medal,” which is a tad tone-deaf considering over 5,600 people didn’t officially finish because of the bombing.

CEO Nicholas Thorne is a Goldman Sachs alum and seems committed to evolving the idea as necessary, allowing users to place badges wherever they want to “put their accomplishments on display.” He says the team already has numerous partnerships in athletics — particularly with marathon and endurance events — and will be expanding the team and the platform over the next year.
