500px Just Raised $8.8 Million To Take On Flickr, Picasa and Instagram In Photo-Sharing

Canadian photo-sharing service 500px has raised $8.8 million in its first round of funding led by Andreessen Horowitz and with participation from Creative Artists Agency, according to VentureBeat.

The site has over 2.5 million users, with more than a billion page views each month. They’ll need those robust numbers to stave off the myriad skeptics of the photo-sharing space, myself included. It’s an overly-crowded market, to be sure — Flickr, Picasa, Instagram, Facebook, and endless apps — but 500px is trying to separate itself with its fairly robust user base of “professional” photographers.

Anybody use this? Want to fill us in on how it’s different than, say, every other photo-sharing site? Leave us a note in the comments.
