BRAD FELD: Learn To Be A CEO…The Results Are Magical

According to Brad Feld, the job of CEO can be distilled to a few action verbs. Actually acting on those action verbs…that’s another story.

1. LEAD: by example.

2. SET: the vision for the company.

3. RECRUIT: the very best talent. Even if they’re more talented than you.

4. MAKE: sure you have cash in the bank.

5. BE: the advocate for your customer, even if it means putting your company’s short-term needs in second.

6. DRIVE: the execution for the vision.

7. CHAMPION: your company, and be an evangelical for your mission.

Feld says many of these lessons can be learned in the new book “Startup CEO: A Field Guide to Scaling Up Your Business,” by Matt Blumberg (CEO of ReturnPath). He also says the rare moment when you embody all the above goals can be “magical.”

And among those seven goals, numbers 2, 3 and 4 are the most important: set the vision, recruit the best talent, and make sure your financially solvent.

Remember: if all these actions were easy, 75% of startups wouldn’t fail.
