According to VentureBeat, Disney will be launching a ‘Disney Accelerator’ incubator program in partnership with TechStars, with the goal of training and funding 10 early-stage consumer and entertainment startups each quarter. Startups will receive $120,000 in investment capital, as well as access to Disney’s vast library of intellectual property, including all stories and characters across the company’s 90 year history.
Of course, startups who choose to take advantage of Disney-themes aren’t just limited to Mickey Mouse; Disney’s vast portfolio of media holdings include ESPN (sports apps!), LucasFilm (Star Wars apps!), ABC (news apps!), Pixar and Marvel Entertainment.
Can I say now that I hope we see more than just ‘apps’ from this accelerator?
Disney also has a proven partner in TechStars, which runs the accelerator programs of Nike, Sprint and Barclays Capital. Disney’s senior vice president of innovation Michael Abrams will lead the program, which will be based in Los Angeles.
Applications are due April 16, and the program’s website is headlined by a giant photo of Yoda next to his one syntactically correct quote: “Do or do not. There is no try.”
